Skyy is a doe we won't ever forget. At birth, Chad claimed her as his first goat since she was his favorite color. Her name was the result of a compromise: I wanted to name her Selkie (a mythological seal-lady), but Chad wanted to name her after the vodka. Even though she has "Selkie" in her name, the alcohol-naming trend continues on to her progeny.
Skyy is also the reason why I give some of our does second chances. At two months old she broke her left hind leg above the hock. Our vet set her leg, but once the cast came off, she started walking with her left hock turned-in, where she hadn't before. Instead of selling her into a pet home, we kept her dry as a yearling, in hopes that she would freshen with a decent udder. When she kidded as a 2-year-old, we were pleasantly surprised!
At the 2006 ADGA Nationals in Indianapolis, Indiana, Skyy surprised us even further by placing 16th in a very competitive 3-year-old class, which the National Champion was in. Not too shabby for a broken-legged goat! In 2009, Skyy picked up two of her permanent champion legs. She also opened our 2010 show season with a Grand Champion and Best in Show win (her final leg)! As she has aged, her left rear leg has been straightening some, her pasterns are solid (some say she has 3-year-old feet!), and her udder still looks wonderful. Now if we only convince her to have more doe kids!
